Titleist 907D1 and 907D2 Drivers

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Titleist has recently introduced their latest design in driver technology, the 460cc 907D1 and 907D2 models. The 907D1 feature a triangular shape that incorporates a higher MOI and the 907D2 with its enhanced traditional geometry.

Titleist is renowned for their quality, and with a proven track record the number one brand has strived once again to product another quality product. The 5,000+ inertia value of the 907D1 is as high as any other titanium driver currently available.

The 907D1 has proven to be the model which has received the most attention due to its triangular club head and will be in direct competition with the Nike Sumo2 SasQuatch driver with its similar design. The 907D2 has been the driver of choice for most of the Titleist tour pros and is likely to be the driver of choice for the player who is looking for workability of the tee.

These drivers are set for release on April 1st in the states so keep an open eye for them in the UK as very promising things are likely to follow!

TaylorMade R7 Draw Driver

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

This is the TaylorMade R7 Draw driver, designed with a similar concept to the old R5 Draw driver and a less expensive alternative to the R7 425 Driver at just £149.99 from onlinegolf.co.uk.

The R7 draw has been designed for the mid to high handicapper and promised to turn the fades into draws gaining that extra distance.

I took this club on a trial out on the course and I must say I am impressed. Although there was still the odd fade, the ball generally held true and produced some reliable distance and height. Whether I could say I found myself hitting the long draws I was hoping for is debatable, but I definitely enjoyed playing with the R7 Draw.

The R7 Draw with its larger head and 460cc did produce some good right to left shots, however I did not feel that this new club from TaylorMade measured up to the Nike Sumo2 for the off centre shots and possibly even distance off the tee, but at around £100 cheaper the R7 Draw is definitely a club worth its money.

Nike SasQuatch Sumo2 Driver

Monday, March 12th, 2007

The all-new Nike SasQuatch Sumo2 Driver has evolved from the innovative and hugely popular Nike Golf SasQuatch driver. The promise from Nike Golf is even more distance, forgiveness and accuracy. To achieve this the Sumo2 driver features a powerful new square geometry, which delivers the highest moment of inertia (MOI) in golf (5300 g cm²), meaning that your drives go longer and straighter, even on off-centre shots.

Now in theory this sounds great, but at a price of £200 from onlinegolf is this just another gimmick drawing on the success of the previous Nike Golf SasQuatch driver, or can Nike deliver on their bold promises.

Having played eighteen holes with the Sumo2 the forgiveness is definitely there, for the low and mid handicapped players where off centre shots are a common occurrence the ball still held the fairways and generated good distance. Once you get past the noise on impact the results are undeniable, and the Sumo2 was a pleasure to play with and will certainly be an addition to my bag.

However for the low handicap player, who rarely hits off centre shots, this club will not be an asset to their bag. Instead the Nike SasQuatch Sumo driver with its more conventional shape and titanium head will ultimately provide greater distance and reliability.

All in all the Nike Sumo2 is the definitive driver for the mid-handicapper, providing distance, forgiveness, and accuracy off the tee.
